Akseli Kaukoranta

1. What are some of the everyday activities you perform at SSES?

In my role, I do a lot of planning and preparation. Not a day goes by without checking the calendar at least a couple of times. I also stay in regular contact with faculty, course assistants, and, of course, the rest of my colleagues.

2. What is your proudest SSES accomplishment?

This isn’t a single event, but I’m proud of the processes I’ve streamlined and developed, from recruitment to workshop applications. I’ve realised my superpower is being a ‘pencil sharpener’, fine-tuning things to make them work more efficiently.

3. What are you most grateful for in your daily work?

I’m most grateful for the people I work with, from students to colleagues. The diversity in age, background, and nationality creates a vibrant and inspiring environment, where I can learn something new from them each day.

4. How do you define success?

Finding your passion and following it into new adventures.

5. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

To become a super gardener, able to grow anything under any conditions.

6. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Custard.

7. What book, movie, album, or creative work has had the most influence on you?

Spirited Away, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, was and still is one of my favourite films.

8. What was the latest event or revelation that shifted your perspective on life?

Being part of an SSES bootcamp in Italy was an amazing experience and made me rethink generosity and community in a whole new way.

9. If you were a dish, which one would you be?

Kolokithokeftedes (good luck pronouncing that!) – I spend a few days in the kitchen making them when zucchinis are ripe and overflowing. I freeze them to save some summerness for later in the fall and winter.
