The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) is a public university responsible for one third of Sweden’s total engineering studies and technical research at post-secondary level. The university has over 13,000 undergraduate students, 1,600 active postgraduate students and a staff of 3,400.
The origins of KTH can be traced back to 1827 when the Institute of Technology began offering education in technological subjects with a professional touch. The Institute’s name was changed to Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) in 1877 and the final academic recognition of KTH as an establishment of higher learning arrived in 1927, when it was permitted the right to award students with the title Doctor of Technology.
Ten years earlier in 1917, KTH had moved into purpose-built buildings in the northern part of central Stockholm. KTH is the largest of Sweden’s universities of technology. It is an international institution with established research and educational exchanges all over the world, conducting education and research across a broad spectrum – from natural science to all branches of technology.
