Karolinska Institutet (KI) is one of Europe’s most famous medical universities. It is also Sweden’s largest center for medical training and research, accounting for 30 percent of medical training and 40 percent of medical academic research conducted nationwide. Its mission is to improve the health of mankind through research, education and information.

KI was founded in 1810 on the initiative of King Karl XIII. Confirmation of the standing of KI in the natural scientific field came in 1895, when Alfred Nobel appointed the Institute to decide who was to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This work has since afforded KI with a broad contact network within the medical scientific community.

Aside from research opportunities, Karolinska Institutet currently offers 19 training programs and numerous further education and independent courses in the field of medicine. It also houses Sweden’s largest medical library and the country’s national resource library for medicine, odontology and care sciences.
